Biopsies in Charleston, SC

You or your dentist may notice something abnormal on your gums or in your mouth. A biopsy is a procedure in which a periodontist removes some or all of a lesion from your mouth and sends it to be evaluated to confirm a diagnosis of abnormal gum tissue. A biopsy can confirm whether a lesion might be a result of oral cancer or a non-cancerous benign mouth sore.

You should have a lesion looked at by a dentist or periodontist if it is:

  • A sore or lesion in your mouth that lasts longer than two weeks

  • A white, red, or mixed white and red patch on your gum

  • A swelling or an ulcer on your gum tissue that does not go away on its own

  • Significant changes in your gums that cause loose teeth or dentures
